چکیده

We report the measurement and simulation of the transverse displacement spectrum of a multi-element nanomechanical oscillator at previously inaccessible frequencies of up to 3 GHz. The detected displacement signal is enhanced in the high-frequency range by the presence of high-order resonance modes generated by coherent motion of individual elements. The spectrum reveals a rich structure with groups of peaks forming quasibands. The spectral structure is qualitatively analogous to atomic emission spectra. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1952847g

Diffusion-induced dephasing in nanomechanical resonators

We study resonant response of an underdamped nanomechanical resonator with fluctuating frequency. The fluctuations are due to diffusion of molecules or microparticles along the resonator. They lead to broadening and change of shape of the oscillator spectrum. The spectrum is found for the diffusion confined to a small part of the resonator and where it occurs along the whole nanobeam. The analy...

Evidence for quantized displacement in macroscopic nanomechanical oscillators.

We report the observation of discrete displacement of nanomechanical oscillators with gigahertz-range resonance frequencies at millikelvin temperatures. The oscillators are nanomachined single-crystal structures of silicon, designed to provide two distinct sets of coupled elements with very low and very high frequencies. With this novel design, femtometer-level displacement of the frequency-det...

Oscillating carbon nanotori along carbon nanotubes

The discovery of carbon nanostructures, such as nanotubes and C60 fullerenes, has given rise to a number of potential nanoscale devices. One such device is the gigahertz oscillator, comprising an inner shell sliding inside an outer shell of a multiwalled carbon nanotube, and which, at least theoretically, generates oscillatory frequencies in the gigahertz range. Following the concept of these g...

Nonlinear Damping in Nanomechanical Beam Oscillator

We investigate the impact of nonlinear damping on the dynamics of a nanomechanical doubly clamped beam. The beam is driven into nonlinear regime and the response is measured by a displacement detector. For data analysis we introduce a nonlinear damping term to Duffing equation. The experiment shows conclusively that accounting for nonlinear damping effects is needed for correct modeling of the ...
